01.
Redesigning IA to find content easily
The website attracted many users, and before initiating the redesign, we wanted to understand what aspects were effective and what needed improvement. Additionally, we aimed to explore the needs of our persona, "Data Analysts," when visiting websites offering data and text analysis solutions.
Complex navigation
The website showcased Megaputer's unique solutions but was hindered by a complex structure, with over 120 solutions buried under multiple buttons and subpages. Content was scattered across sections like products, services, blogs, and resources, with key elements like videos and live previews hidden deep, making navigation difficult for users.
Solution
Redoing the information architecture
Using the collected user data, I conducted two rounds of card sorting to organize the website's content. In the first round, I independently sorted and merged categories based on the data to create intuitive navigation for users.
For the second round, I focused on the solutions page, collaborating with Megaputer's data analysts to categorize solutions by industry, role, and type for better alignment with user needs. I was able to get down the number of categories from 35 to 21 without removing any solutions.
02.
Inconsistent Branding
The website suffered from inconsistent branding, poorly designed CTAs, and irrelevant images, which undermined users' trust and credibility when interacting with the site.
Solution
"Consistent brand identity"
Building a cohesive design system
To tackle the challenge of maintaining clarity on a complex website, consistency became the key focus. I developed a comprehensive design system, including buttons, iconography, and interaction patterns, inspired by Google's Material Design. Using this system, I built templates to ensure a cohesive brand identity across the site.
This library now serves as a reference for writers, data analysts, and designers, enabling them to create new content while maintaining consistency.
03
Content overload
The content on the website was of high quality, but its arrangement (layouts) and the text-heavy design made it difficult for users to comprehend and read effectively.
Solution
Increasing the readability
From the interviews and data gathered, users primarily wanted to know how a solution worked and see case studies of its previous implementations. To address this, I placed these details directly beside the solutions. Additionally, I included the impact of each solution to provide extra value to the users. Overall making the section comprehensible.
Content Visibility
The homepage lacked upfront information about the services offered, causing confusion and forcing users to search for them under the Services tab. I reorganized this content to display prominently on the homepage, improving visibility and clarity.
04.
"Building a narrative"
Creating a golden flow for the user
I aimed to make everything users needed easily accessible on the home screen, enabling them to make informed decisions. Additionally, I ensured a natural flow for users to seamlessly navigate to the "Solutions" and "Products" pages when needed.
Company offerings
The flow transitions seamlessly to showcase what the company offers to clients and highlights why it stands out as the best choice.
05.
Redesigning and Testing new site performance
I conducted usability testing with 10 users to evaluate how easily they could find content on the page. I asked them to locate a specific solution without providing any hints. The results showed a significant improvement in task completion time—users were 75.6% faster on the new website. Previously, the task took 1 minute and 30 seconds (90 seconds), but on the updated site, it only took 37 seconds.
Learnings
Importance of rapid prototyping
A key factor that helped us iterate effectively during the project was the ability to rapidly prototype and test with users. This allowed us to quickly determine what worked and make necessary adjustments. As a result, we developed a prototype that felt like the real website well before the final testing phase.
Design System is an evolving process
Initially, we planned to complete the design system as a one-time task. However, as we progressed, we realized that building a design system is an ongoing process that requires continuous iteration and refinement. Design systems evolve alongside the website, adapting to new requirements, user feedback, and to maintain consistency and scalability.
